NYC call for Hotel info...
I'll be going to a swim meet at the Nassau County Aquatic Center <http://www.nassaucountyny.gov/agencies/parks/wheretogo/recreation/nc_aqua_ctr.html> December 5th and 6th. Anybody know of a decent hotel to stay at that's an easy commute to the pool by car? | | Friday, July 24th, 2009 | | 8:23 pm |
Maryland Field Trip
The first weekend for the Maryland Renaissance Festival is August 29-30. The Medieval Babes - add extra vowels wherever you want there - ( http://www.mediaevalbaebes.com/) will be performing at the Faire for that weekend only. They'll only be on this side of the pond for about of week and Lesley likes them maybe even more that she likes Madonna (heresy). So, needless to say, we're going. We are having thoughts of combining the trip to the Faire with a trip to Ocean City, MD. My current thought is to head down to the O.C. early Saturday morning, spend the day wandering around there (beach/swimming, boardwalk, more beach/swimming, funnel cakes, etc), and then head toward the Faire and stay at a hotel somewhere past midway (Cambridge, MD?). We could also swap days. Anyone interested in joining us for any or all of this? | | Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009 | | 12:36 pm |
Hanging with The Mann...
OK, actually hanging out _at_ The Mann. Pretty much every year I go to see _some_ concert at The Mann Center for the Performing Arts. Previous years it's been: LoTR Symphony, Bugs Bunny on Broadway, Peter and the Wolf, And Robert Plant and Allison Krauss. This year, though I may be overdoing it. I've been to see a night of Beethoven (including the 5th which I rarely miss), a night that included The Four Seasons and The Firebird, last night was stuff used in film scores (John WIlliams - Star Wars, Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, and The Blue Danube), and tonight is Peter Nero and the Philly Pops - The Best of Bernstein and the Riches of Rodgers. I think that'll be it this year though. I hope I'm feeling OK to go as I think I was attacked by a chicken sandwich last night and I'm off sick today as my stomach is still dicey. | | Thursday, July 16th, 2009 | | 6:55 pm |
The circus is the place for you....
I joined the circus. Well, not quite. But Leofwynn and I did go to an Intro to Aerials course at the Philadelphia School for the Circus Arts http://www.phillycircus.com/ on Sunday. We both thought the trapeze was cool. The rope and fabric though... really hard and not our cup of tea. Leofwynn is thinking about doing more stuff with it but I don't see myself making time from swimming for it. There may be pics later as Leofwynn's coworker brought a friend that took several pics of all of us. | | Tuesday, July 14th, 2009 | | 9:43 pm |
The week of too much going on.....
Things happening the first week in August include: An Orthodox Jewish wedding in NYC for leofwynn's friend (Sun, Aug 2), Worldcon in Montreal (Aug 6-10), Pennsic (July 24-Aug 9), The U.S. Masters Swimming Long Course Nationals (Aug 6-10), a bicycle race my company entered at the Allentown Velodrome (Aug 8), and an Orthodox Jewish wedding in Chicago for leofwynn's cousin (Sun Aug 9). This resulted in a very "interesting" ( SAGA. ) | | Wednesday, June 24th, 2009 | | 9:32 pm |

This weekend
Lesley and I will be at Gaian Mind ( http://gaian-mind.com/gmsf/) with some friends from Philly so we'll probably be out of cell phone reach. Here's hoping the weather is reasonably good, although we do have a cabin as opposed to just tents. | | Friday, June 5th, 2009 | | 2:16 pm |
Charlaine Harris Fest
Hanging out at home watching True Blood eps on HBO On Demand alternating with reading _Shakespeare's Champion_. Life is good. | | Thursday, June 4th, 2009 | | 8:07 pm |
Philly airport fun...
Flew in to KC from Philly last night to hang out with my mom. The cool thing is that the Morris twins were on the flight. The not so cool thing is that the plane hung out on the runway from when we boarded at 7:30pm EDT until we left at about midnight EDT. | | Sunday, April 12th, 2009 | | 11:06 am |

Swim Team Beef and Beer fundraiser
Each year, the US Masters Swim Team that I'm on has a fundraiser beef and beer event. This year it's May 2nd from 7-11pm. Tickets are $25. It includes all you can eat. A picture of the flyer is included below. Proceeds go towards sending team members to Long Course Nationals ( http://www.usms.org/comp/lcnats09/) as well as other swim meet and post swim meet activities the team participates in. If anyone is interested in buying tickets, let me know. | | Sunday, February 22nd, 2009 | | 5:03 pm |
Book Signing Promotion...
Between Books, the awesome independent genre bookstore that I go to in Claymont, DE, is having a book signing/performance with Catherynne Valente ( http://www.catherynnemvalente.com/) on Saturday, February 28th at 7pm. Come down and check out the bookstore and the performance. | | Saturday, November 1st, 2008 | | 6:16 pm |
I'll be going to Dracula's Ball tonight...
Where the Mediaeval Baebes will be performing. It'll be interesting to see if Leofwynn can contain her excitement. I will also be recording the Texas Vs. Texas Tech football game. I think it would be interesting if there were some scenario whereby the Big 12 South teams (OU, OSU, UT, and TT) all gave each other one loss and 2 of them ended up in the national championship game playing each other. So for that reason I'd kind of like to see TT win. But I think that if that happened some undeserving SEC team would get in instead. Therefore, it'd be more fun for UT to win and be undefeated when KU gives them some payback for the last time they were in Lawrence. Hey, I never said I wasn't delusional when it comes to KU sports! :) | | Saturday, October 18th, 2008 | | 8:32 pm |
Sports Rant: You've been warned
I just got done watching the Kansas vs. Oklahoma football game and wanted to see if ESPN.com had any links to a post game news conference. I didn't find that, but I did find a headline claiming "OU crushes Kansas." WTF? Yes, OU won. And they were up by 21 at one point. But I can't believe that anyone that actually _saw_ the game could claim that OU "crushed" KU. USC _crushed_ WSU today. Someone writing headlines for ESPN should be "crushed." OU won 45 to 31 in a game that KU was in most of the way and was just a few plays away from being even or ahead. Yes, Bradford, (the OU quarterback) had a monster game as KU wasn't able to stop him very often but I don't remember seeing headlines of UT crushes OU when Texas beat OU 45-35 last week. On another note, I wonder how much Bob Stoops paid the officials for this game. It seems like every single 50-50 call went OU's way, as well as several calls that you _never_ see called. Like calling intentional grounding on a pass that almost hit the running back. Or the reception that Briscoe had that was taken away from him after he hit the ground by a player that hadn't been defending him when he caught the ball, and was ruled an interception/fumble giving the ball to OU. Or the really wimpy late hit (light tap) in (I mean out of) bounds on Bradford later in the game. I didn't get a good look at the "horse collar" tackle but that rule is designed to prevent the tackling of players by pulling them down from inside the shoulder pads from behind like what happened to Terrell Owens the year the Eagles went to the Super Bowl. Not for a front tackle by the shoulder. After the game was essentially over, the replay booth tried to do it again, saying Briscoe stepped out of bounds on a touchdown catch when t looked like the definition of inconclusive on the replays that I saw. Just a bunch of bogus stuff, and KU just didn't play well enough to overcome all those calls. This whole game kept making me think of a certain offensive pass interference call from the KU vs Texas game in 2004. Ugh. | | Thursday, July 31st, 2008 | | 10:24 pm |
Vacation plans, etc
I'm going to be pretty busy the next couple of weeks with various things. I will be going to my first Pennsic this year and will be hanging out there for a week and a half. Unfortunately, this means that I _won't_ be going to WorldCon. It seemed like I had an equal number of friends going both places so I picked the closer one. I'm bummed that I won't be seeing all of my KC and other friends at Worldcon but you all have a great time in Denver without me. For those that are interested, it looks like my next SF Con will be Albacon Oct 10-12 for a stop on the Liaden World Tour (TM) --- not to mention Anne McCaffrey. | | Monday, July 14th, 2008 | | 9:31 am |
